Paul Carroll
Hi! I’m a computer scientist and aspiring author living just north of San Francisco.
I’ve spent much of my career programming robots at companies that mostly don’t exist anymore. I’ve written software that pilots high-altitude balloons, self-driving cars, workplace security robots, and robotic arms. Robots are great, and I’d like to work on them again someday.
Since 2024, I’ve worked at Anthropic on the problem of how data is encoded into Claude: tokens, prompt shapes, that sort of thing. I feel great excitement and great apprehension about AI and where the world is going. I hope we can get it right.
I graduated from Stanford with degrees in computer science and history and a creative writing minor. In my free time, I write historically-flavored fantasy novels and stories.
As of 2025, I also have a son who is much cuter and more charismatic than I am. My wife and I love to take him on adventures.
